We pave the way for sustainable development

The new Georgioupolis Wastewater Treatment Plant, owned by the Municipality of Apokoronas, was completed, which was implemented by the Joint Venture "Thalis Environmental Services S.A-NAOYM S.TH. S.T.S.", constituting a modern sustainable solution for securing the water resource at a time when the challenges of climate change are intensifying.

It is an innovative project that contributes significantly to the tourist and residential development of Crete, improving the living conditions of the residents of the wider area and thousands of foreign tourists who visit it.

More specifically, the new plant is expected to serve the needs of an equivalent population of about 20 thousand people in the next twenty years and is fully automated, ensuring with the most advanced technology, the water cycle. The facility can operate throughout the year (winter-summer) and according to the design data it is expected to treat 6,560 m³ of water and 10,350 m³ of water respectively during the summer period of the first (20 years) and second phase (40 years).

With the new modern wastewater management project, the protection of the natural characteristics of the area, namely the sandy beach, the watercourses and the marine environment of Almyros Bay, is achieved, while at the same time environmentally sensitive areas such as Lake Kournas and the marsh of Georgioupolis are protected. 

The Chief Operating Officer  of Thalis, Ms. Theodosia Bantouva-Papazisi, thanked the Region of Crete, the Municipality of Apokoronas and the supervising service for the excellent cooperation throughout the construction of the project, stating among others: "The project incorporates modern technologies, is characterized by technical excellence and low environmental footprint.
