Landmark Project to Address Water Scarcity in Rethymno.

Today in Rethymno, the contract signing ceremony for the project "Utilization of the Amari Rivers Dam Reservoir: Water Treatment Facility" took place in the presence of: Minister of Infrastructure and Transport, Mr. C. Staikouras,Minister of Rural Development and Food, Mr. C. Tsiaras, Deputy Minister of National Defense and MP for Rethymno, Mr. G. Kefalogiannis, Governor of Crete, Mr. S. Arnaoutakis, Secretary General for Waste Management Coordination, Mr. M. Grafakos, Mayor of Rethymno, Mr. G. Marinakis, and the CEO of the Crete Development Organization S.A., Mr. A. Papadogiannis.

Following the contract signing, Mr. Dimitris Kontaxis, General Director of Circular Economy for the Motor Oil Group and Vice President of THALIS, made the following statement:

"The Amari Water Treatment Plant is a milestone for the holistic management of the water cycle, particularly in an era where our country faces the challenge of water scarcity under the conditions of climate change. This is yet another significant investment in the region that contributes to the improvement of public health, ensuring the continuous supply of clean and safe drinking water.

The facility will have the capacity to process 10 million m³ of water annually, meeting the drinking water needs of Rethymno’s residents and visitors. At the same time, the project promotes local development by creating green jobs and reducing energy consumption. With proper collaboration and sustainable investments, we can build infrastructure that makes a difference for society and the environment.
