Water Reuse & Circular Wastewater Management: The Heraklion WWTP Project at the Heart of Public Dialogue.

Published : July 4th, 2025

THALIS, as a Bronze Sponsor of the Water Summit 2025 (GWAS25), actively participated in the public dialogue on the future of sustainable water resource management.

Mr. Manolis Chatzakis, Head of the THALIS Department in Crete, took part in the panel discussion entitled “Water and the Agricultural Sector: The Irrigation Challenge in Terms of Sustainability,” presenting the new requirements of European policy and THALIS' practical contribution through projects that promote circular management and water reuse.

As part of the discussion, the country’s largest urban wastewater reuse project, implemented by THALIS for the Heraklion Water Utility (DEYAH) and funded by the Recovery and Resilience Facility, was highlighted as a key case study.

This is the largest holistic wastewater reuse project in Greece, where for the first time the principles of the new Directive 2024/3019 are applied. Through an ultrafiltration (UF) unit and the use of activated carbon, complete removal of micropollutants and high-quality treatment is achieved, enabling the safe reuse of treated effluent.

The produced effluent—exceeding 10 million cubic meters annually—will be used to irrigate peri-urban green spaces and agricultural areas of the Municipality of Heraklion, covering strategically important water needs and enhancing the sustainability of the agricultural sector.

With this project, urban wastewater is no longer treated as waste but as a valuable natural resource, confirming THALIS’ commitment to innovation, the green transition, and making a meaningful contribution to a more resilient and sustainable society.
