REHABILITATION – RESTORATION OF BUILDING FACILITIES AND SURROUNDING AREA OF MAVE – LANDFILL CONSTRUCTION

The area of the asbestos mine of MAVE (Northern Greece Asbestos Mines S.A.) is located in the southwestern part of the Prefecture of Kozani and at a distance of approximately 40 kilometers from the city of Kozani. The total area of the MAVE plot amounts to 4,150 acres.
MABE area is made up of 4 sections:
- The mine, which occupies an area of 335 acres is in the southern part of the plot. A lake of 125.4 acres has been formed in its central part
- The area of the tailings of both the mine and the factory occupying an area of 532 acres, of which 220 acres concern the fine-grained deposits of the factory (tailings) at the northern and eastern ends of the plot.
- The building facilities, which occupy almost 25,000 m2 (with the total area of the buildings approaching 44,000 m2).
- The remaining outdoor spaces characterized as flat surfaces.
The project concerns the completion of the rehabilitation project of the facilities and the surrounding area of MABE, and includes works such as:
- Cleaning of premises from asbestos. It includes the completion of the restoration of all areas that have not been cleaned from the previous interventions and concern the cleaning of asbestos for all building facilities, the surfaces around them, the contaminated soil of the study area, the scattered facilities in the project area, the old staff settlement.
- Cleaning the premises from petroleum products. It includes the cleaning of facilities, mechanical equipment, and scattered quantities in the surrounding area from petroleum products
- Storage, transport, and disposal of materials at XYTAM
- Landfill construction. At a specific location within the site of the MAVE plot, an asbestos landfill was constructed to which all hazardous asbestos waste and petroleum products were sent. The expansion of the existing landfill has a capacity of 20,000 m3 of asbestos waste and an area of 21.1 hectares
- Rehabilitation with configuration projects. They were shaped and covered with vegetable land, areas of the surrounding plot of the MABE
- Restoration with green projects. The areas were restored by laying topsoil and planting plants with the necessary irrigation network.
- Environmental monitoring.
